THE UPTOWN COLLECTIVE – READINGS

UC-SR-MakeBrkGlass

Join The Uptown Collective at The Dream Center for a staged reading with professional actors of a new artist’s work followed by a talkback! Light food and refreshments will be served.

Synopsis:
The Making and Breaking of Glass is a single-play retelling of Sophocles’ Theban Trilogy focused on the younger generation: Antigone, Ismene, Polynices, Eteocles, and Haemon. We follow the First Family of Greek Tragedy, still rulers of the ancient city of Thebes but styled after characters on a CW teen melodrama, through events spanning from the beginning of Oedipus Rex to the end of Antigone and watch as their carefree, privileged world is torn apart, first by plague and then by in-fighting and revolution.

The Making and Breaking of Glass is a critical exploration of privilege and purpose for “liberal elites” in their 20s and 30s who grew up watching Gossip Girl and are now mired in existential crisis after realizing that their attendance at a bunch of anti-Trump protests really did nothing at all; it asks what one does when one has everything except a reason to exist.
